Guide

What the NESCAC list includes

This page is the eleven-member New England Small College Athletic Conference. It is a hand roster, because the football field is one school short. Connecticut College is a NESCAC member and has no football conference in this file. The other ten do.

The table is alphabetical. It is not a ranking of the colleges, and it is not a football standings table. Williams, Amherst, and Middlebury sit here because they are members. Their research class and admission rates are separate facts.

Eleven members, ten football rows

The football conference string in this file is New England Small College Athletic Conference. That string matches Amherst, Bates, Bowdoin, Colby, Hamilton, Middlebury, Trinity College, Tufts, Wesleyan University, and Williams. Connecticut College does not carry the string, so a page built only from the field would drop a member.

This roster puts Connecticut College back. The conference plays many sports besides football. A football-only cut is the wrong NESCAC page. The source line under the table says the same thing.

Similar names that are different schools

Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, is the NESCAC member. Wesleyan College in Georgia is a different college, and it is not on this page. Trinity College in Hartford is the member. Trinity University in Texas plays in a different conference and stays off.

The University of Massachusetts Amherst is not a NESCAC college. It is a land-grant university with its own football conference in this file. A New England address is not membership. The Ivy League is a different conference, and none of these eleven are Ivy football members.

How to read a small conference

Use the list to open the eleven campuses. Admission rate, price, and earnings describe the colleges. They do not describe a season. Wins, coaches, and athletic scholarships are not columns here. Division III rules on athletic scholarships are not stored as a dollar field in this file.

Several of these colleges are also on the liberal arts page, because their Carnegie code is baccalaureate arts and sciences. That overlap is a second list, not a rank inside this one. Open a campus when you need net price rather than the sticker.

Why this one is not a field match

The Big Ten, ACC, Big 12, and SEC pages match a football string because that string is the whole membership those pages claim. NESCAC is the exception on this site. The string is almost the conference, and the missing school is known.

If Connecticut College later receives a football conference value, the hand roster still keeps it. The page does not wait on that field. A school outside these eleven does not join because it plays a NESCAC opponent.

Where the schools are

These schools sit in 5 states. The largest groups are Connecticut (3), Maine (3), Massachusetts (3), New York (1), and Vermont (1). The rest of the roll is spread across the other states in the table.

Who runs them

Every school with a reported control is a private nonprofit college. Control is the Scorecard field. It is not a judgment about quality.

Predominant degree is the credential the campus awards most often. On this list it is a bachelor's degree at 11 schools. A campus can still award other credentials.

How large they are

The largest undergraduate enrollments on this list are Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts, with 7,061 undergraduates, Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, with 3,067 undergraduates, and Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont, with 2,738 undergraduates. Enrollment is the undergraduate figure. It is not a ranking, and it leaves out graduate students.

Admission

11 of 11 schools report an admission rate. The median of those rates is 11%. Schools with no reported rate stay out of the median. A missing rate is not an open door, and it is not a closed one.

The lowest reported admission rates on this list are Colby College in Waterville, Maine, at 7%, Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, at 7%, and Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts, at 8%. A lower rate is harder entry. It is not a score for the school.

The highest reported admission rates on this list are Connecticut College in New London, Connecticut, at 37%, Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, at 29%, and Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, at 16%.

What they charge

Among 11 private colleges that report a sticker price, the median is $68,960.

Sticker price is not net price. Grants, waivers, and a service commitment can move the bill by a wide margin. Open a school for the net-price figures.

Earnings and graduation

Among 11 schools that report earnings, the median of those school-level medians is $78,411. The clock starts at entry, not at graduation. The highest reported medians on this list are Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, at $90,779, Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts, at $88,665, and Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts, at $83,214.

Among 11 schools that report a graduation rate, the median rate is 91%. A blank rate is left out. It is not treated as zero.

Also on other lists

Some of these schools also meet the rule for another list on this site. The overlap is a second flag or a second classification. It is not a second ranking.

1 is also on R1 research universities. 10 are also on liberal arts colleges.

How these figures work

Admission rate, enrollment, sticker price, earnings, and graduation rate all come from the College Scorecard. Earnings are the median 10 years after a student entered the school. Tuition for a public college is the in-state sticker price. Tuition for a private college is the published sticker price. None of these is net price after aid.

A blank field stays blank. This page does not turn a blank admission rate into an open door, a blank fee into a free application, or a blank earnings figure into zero. The table above is membership under the rule in this guide. Sort order is not a quality ranking.
