Division III membership comes from the Equity in Athletics data. Enrollment and admission rates come from the College Scorecard.

Guide

What NCAA Division III means here

This page lists colleges whose athletics division is NCAA Division III. Division III does not award athletic scholarships. Academic aid is separate, and it is on the school profile rather than in this membership rule. The table sorts by state.

The Ivy League is not in this division. Ivy football is FCS, inside Division I, and the Ivy conference has its own ban on athletic scholarships. A reader who equates no athletic scholarship with Division III will misfile those eight universities.

One division value

The match is athletics division equals NCAA Division III. Every such campus is included, whether or not it fields football. A liberal arts college and a larger campus can share the division. The Carnegie class is a different column.

NESCAC football schools are inside this division when the file says Division III. This page does not split them out. The division is the rule a reader can check. A conference nickname is not required.

Who stays in another division

Division I and Division II campuses stay off, including FCS programs that look like small colleges from a distance. Club teams and intramural sports do not create a Division III row. The field has to say NCAA Division III.

A blank division stays off this page. Do not treat a missing athletics record as Division III by default. Some colleges simply have no division in the file.

Academics and athletics are different fields

Many Division III colleges are also in the baccalaureate arts and sciences class. Many are not. Use the liberal arts page when the Carnegie code is the question. Use this page when the athletics division is the question.

State sort helps because the division is national and the campuses are local. Earnings and admission rate are Scorecard facts about the college. They are not a measure of the athletics program.

The scholarship rule, stated plainly

The no-athletic-scholarship rule is an NCAA division rule. This site repeats it so the page is usable. It does not audit each campus's aid letters. Need-based aid and merit aid can still be large. Those are not athletic scholarships.

If you are comparing a Division III college with an Ivy, compare the Scorecard profiles. Do not assume the athletics rules are the same just because both limit athletic aid. The divisions are different.

Where the schools are

These schools sit in 36 states. The largest groups are New York (59), Pennsylvania (57), Massachusetts (36), Illinois (22), and Wisconsin (22). The rest of the roll is spread across the other states in the table.

The full roll has 404 schools. The table shows 100 at a time. The page links under the table move through the rest. Page 1 is the canonical address.

Who runs them

By reported control, 321 are private nonprofit and 83 are public. A blank control stays out of that split.

Predominant degree is the credential the campus awards most often. On this list it is a bachelor's degree at 398 schools and an associate degree at 6 schools. A campus can still award other credentials.

How large they are

The largest undergraduate enrollments on this list are New York University in New York, New York, with 28,663 undergraduates, Montclair State University in Montclair, New Jersey, with 18,376 undergraduates, University of California-Santa Cruz in Santa Cruz, California, with 17,940 undergraduates, CUNY Hunter College in New York, New York, with 16,289 undergraduates, and CUNY Bernard M Baruch College in New York, New York, with 16,154 undergraduates. Enrollment is the undergraduate figure. It is not a ranking, and it leaves out graduate students.

Admission

399 of 404 schools report an admission rate. The median of those rates is 76%. Schools with no reported rate stay out of the median. A missing rate is not an open door, and it is not a closed one.

The lowest reported admission rates on this list are California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, California, at 3%, University of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois, at 4%, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts, at 5%. A lower rate is harder entry. It is not a score for the school.

The highest reported admission rates on this list are Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, at 100%, University of Maine at Presque Isle in Presque Isle, Maine, at 100%, and Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, at 100%.

What they charge

Among 83 public colleges that report an in-state sticker price, the median is $11,284. Among 321 private colleges that report a sticker price, the median is $43,496.

Sticker price is not net price. Grants, waivers, and a service commitment can move the bill by a wide margin. Open a school for the net-price figures.

Earnings and graduation

Among 403 schools that report earnings, the median of those school-level medians is $58,170. The clock starts at entry, not at graduation. The highest reported medians on this list are Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts, at $143,372, California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, California, at $128,566, and Babson College in Wellesley, Massachusetts, at $123,938.

Among 404 schools that report a graduation rate, the median rate is 64%. A blank rate is left out. It is not treated as zero.

Also on other lists

Some of these schools also meet the rule for another list on this site. The overlap is a second flag or a second classification. It is not a second ranking.

13 are also on R1 research universities. 15 are also on R2 research universities. 121 are also on liberal arts colleges. 49 are also on Hispanic-serving institutions. 6 are also on women's colleges.

How these figures work

Admission rate, enrollment, sticker price, earnings, and graduation rate all come from the College Scorecard. Earnings are the median 10 years after a student entered the school. Tuition for a public college is the in-state sticker price. Tuition for a private college is the published sticker price. None of these is net price after aid.

A blank field stays blank. This page does not turn a blank admission rate into an open door, a blank fee into a free application, or a blank earnings figure into zero. The table above is membership under the rule in this guide. Sort order is not a quality ranking.
