Guide

How the American Athletic list is built

This page lists schools whose IPEDS football conference is American Athletic Conference. Readers shorten that name in several ways. The match uses the full federal string. The table is alphabetical, and it is a football roster.

Cincinnati, Houston, and UCF are Big Twelve football schools in this file, so they are not here. UConn's football conference is Division I Independents, so UConn is not here either. A school with no football team cannot match this string.

Football members only

The page keeps a row when the football conference equals American Athletic Conference. It does not keep a historical member whose field now names another conference. It does not keep a school that plays other sports with the conference and does not play football.

Rice and Tulane are examples of private universities on this football list. Public universities are on it too. Control is the fact column. It is not the membership test. The test is the conference string alone.

Schools people still associate with the name

The University of Cincinnati, the University of Houston, and the University of Central Florida carry the Big Twelve Conference string. They belong on the Big 12 page. The University of Connecticut carries Division I Independents and belongs on the FBS page, not here.

Wichita State is a Division I school with no football conference in this file. No football string means no place on a football-conference page. A basketball membership, if it exists, is not a field this page can read.

What the rows are for

Use the roster to open Scorecard profiles for the football members. Admission rate and earnings belong to the students, not to the team. A selective private university and a broader public university can share this conference.

Do not read the alphabetical order as a predicted finish. The site does not store standings. The price split below is a sticker comparison, and sticker is not net price.

Same method as the other FBS conferences

Big Ten, ACC, Big 12, SEC, Mountain West, Sun Belt, Mid-American, and Conference USA pages all match one football string. This page is that method under a different name. The name in the file is American Athletic Conference.

When a school changes conferences, this page changes only after the field changes. Until then, the older string remains the membership test. Check the source line if you need the vintage of the file.

Where the schools are

These schools sit in 8 states. The largest groups are Texas (3), Florida (2), North Carolina (2), Alabama (1), and Louisiana (1). The rest of the roll is spread across the other states in the table.

Who runs them

By reported control, 9 are public and 3 are private nonprofit. A blank control stays out of that split.

Predominant degree is the credential the campus awards most often. On this list it is a bachelor's degree at 12 schools. A campus can still award other credentials.

How large they are

The largest undergraduate enrollments on this list are University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida, with 37,207 undergraduates, University of North Texas in Denton, Texas, with 34,341 undergraduates, and The University of Texas at San Antonio in San Antonio, Texas, with 30,580 undergraduates. Enrollment is the undergraduate figure. It is not a ranking, and it leaves out graduate students.

Admission

12 of 12 schools report an admission rate. The median of those rates is 72%. Schools with no reported rate stay out of the median. A missing rate is not an open door, and it is not a closed one.

The lowest reported admission rates on this list are Rice University in Houston, Texas, at 8%, Tulane University of Louisiana in New Orleans, Louisiana, at 14%, and University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida, at 43%. A lower rate is harder entry. It is not a score for the school.

The highest reported admission rates on this list are East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina, at 89%, University of Alabama at Birmingham in Birmingham, Alabama, at 88%, and The University of Texas at San Antonio in San Antonio, Texas, at 87%.

What they charge

Among 9 public colleges that report an in-state sticker price, the median is $9,011. Among 3 private colleges that report a sticker price, the median is $64,144.

Sticker price is not net price. Grants, waivers, and a service commitment can move the bill by a wide margin. Open a school for the net-price figures.

Earnings and graduation

Among 12 schools that report earnings, the median of those school-level medians is $57,210. The clock starts at entry, not at graduation. The highest reported medians on this list are Rice University in Houston, Texas, at $89,718, Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at $63,727, and Tulane University of Louisiana in New Orleans, Louisiana, at $63,268.

Among 12 schools that report a graduation rate, the median rate is 67%. A blank rate is left out. It is not treated as zero.

Also on other lists

Some of these schools also meet the rule for another list on this site. The overlap is a second flag or a second classification. It is not a second ranking.

8 are also on R1 research universities. 4 are also on R2 research universities. 3 are also on Hispanic-serving institutions.

How these figures work

Admission rate, enrollment, sticker price, earnings, and graduation rate all come from the College Scorecard. Earnings are the median 10 years after a student entered the school. Tuition for a public college is the in-state sticker price. Tuition for a private college is the published sticker price. None of these is net price after aid.

A blank field stays blank. This page does not turn a blank admission rate into an open door, a blank fee into a free application, or a blank earnings figure into zero. The table above is membership under the rule in this guide. Sort order is not a quality ranking.
