How the Big 12 football list is built

This page lists schools whose IPEDS football conference is Big Twelve Conference. That is the spelling in the federal file. Readers say Big 12. The page accepts the file's name so the match stays exact. The table is alphabetical.

The list is football membership, same as the other conference pages. A school without a football team is off. A school in a different football conference is off. The figures below describe whoever the file currently codes as Big Twelve.

Big Twelve, as IPEDS spells it

Matching Big Twelve Conference avoids pulling in a school that merely has the number 12 in its name. The conference has changed membership over time. This page follows the current football field, not a remembered roster from an earlier season.

Because the rule is the field, a new football member appears when IPEDS records it. An announced move that is not in the file yet does not appear. The source note under the table is the place to see which athletics year you are looking at.

Other conferences and other sports

Big Ten, SEC, and ACC football schools have their own pages. They are not folded into this one. A basketball opponent is not a football member. This file does not build basketball conference pages, because the conference field is the football conference.

An independent FBS team stays on the FBS page and off this one. Independence is its own conference value. It is not a blank that this page fills in with a guess.

Institutions, not standings

Use the rows to open Scorecard profiles for the football members. Price, admission, and earnings are institutional. A successful season does not move a university up this table, because the table is alphabetical on purpose.

Public and private members can share a conference. The control split below shows the mix. In-state sticker price applies to the public rows. It is not what an out-of-state student pays.

Why the name looks slightly different

Big 12 is the public name. Big Twelve Conference is the IPEDS name. Showing both in this guide is meant to stop a failed search. If you are checking the work, look for the longer spelling in the source file.

The FBS page is the parent set. Every school here should also be an FBS football school. If you want teams outside this conference, start there, or open another conference page.

Where the schools are

These schools sit in 10 states. The largest groups are Texas (4), Arizona (2), Kansas (2), Utah (2), and Colorado (1). The rest of the roll is spread across the other states in the table.

Who runs them

By reported control, 13 are public and 3 are private nonprofit. A blank control stays out of that split.

Predominant degree is the credential the campus awards most often. On this list it is a bachelor's degree at 16 schools. A campus can still award other credentials.

How large they are

The largest undergraduate enrollments on this list are Arizona State University Campus Immersion in Tempe, Arizona, with 64,674 undergraduates, University of Central Florida in Orlando, Florida, with 59,146 undergraduates, and University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona, with 42,537 undergraduates. Enrollment is the undergraduate figure. It is not a ranking, and it leaves out graduate students.

Admission

16 of 16 schools report an admission rate. The median of those rates is 80%. Schools with no reported rate stay out of the median. A missing rate is not an open door, and it is not a closed one.

The lowest reported admission rates on this list are University of Central Florida in Orlando, Florida, at 40%, Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas, at 44%, and Baylor University in Waco, Texas, at 51%. A lower rate is harder entry. It is not a score for the school.

The highest reported admission rates on this list are University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas, at 93%, Arizona State University Campus Immersion in Tempe, Arizona, at 90%, and West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia, at 89%.

What they charge

Among 13 public colleges that report an in-state sticker price, the median is $11,221. Among 3 private colleges that report a sticker price, the median is $58,100.

Sticker price is not net price. Grants, waivers, and a service commitment can move the bill by a wide margin. Open a school for the net-price figures.

Earnings and graduation

Among 16 schools that report earnings, the median of those school-level medians is $62,416. The clock starts at entry, not at graduation. The highest reported medians on this list are Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, at $75,790, University of Colorado Boulder in Boulder, Colorado, at $69,738, and Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas, at $68,424.

Among 16 schools that report a graduation rate, the median rate is 70%. A blank rate is left out. It is not treated as zero.

Also on other lists

Some of these schools also meet the rule for another list on this site. The overlap is a second flag or a second classification. It is not a second ranking.

14 are also on R1 research universities. 2 are also on R2 research universities. 5 are also on Hispanic-serving institutions.

How these figures work

Admission rate, enrollment, sticker price, earnings, and graduation rate all come from the College Scorecard. Earnings are the median 10 years after a student entered the school. Tuition for a public college is the in-state sticker price. Tuition for a private college is the published sticker price. None of these is net price after aid.

A blank field stays blank. This page does not turn a blank admission rate into an open door, a blank fee into a free application, or a blank earnings figure into zero. The table above is membership under the rule in this guide. Sort order is not a quality ranking.
