The HSI flag, enrollment, and admission rate come from the College Scorecard (IPEDS).

Guide

What Hispanic-serving institution means here

An HSI on this page is a college the College Scorecard flags as a Hispanic-serving institution. The flag is an enrollment designation. It is not a religious label, and it is not a historical founding mission the way the HBCU flag is. The table sorts by state.

The set includes large public universities. UC Irvine carries the flag, so a research university can be an HSI. The page does not recompute a Hispanic enrollment share. It uses the flag the file already publishes.

The federal flag

Hispanic-serving institution is a federal designation tied to undergraduate enrollment, generally a Hispanic share of at least 25 percent, plus other eligibility rules. This page does not recheck that arithmetic. If the Scorecard flag is set, the campus is listed.

A campus can carry this flag and another one. An HBCU, a women's college, or an R1 university stays on this page when the HSI flag is also set. The other pages do not cancel this one.

A high share is not a hand edit

This site will not add a college because a news story quotes a percentage. The flag is the rule, so the list can lag a campus that recently crossed the line, and it can include a campus for as long as the flag remains.

HBCU and tribal college are different flags. A college serving many Hispanic students is not an HBCU for that reason. Use the page that matches the flag you mean.

A wide mix of campuses

The list is long, and it mixes community colleges, regional publics, and research universities. Read predominant degree and control below before you picture one type of school. State sort is there because the designation clusters in some states.

Admission policy is independent of the flag. An HSI can be open-admission or selective. The admission section below shows the spread. The flag does not tell you whether scores are required.

Designation is not a ranking

Nothing on this page says one HSI serves students better than another. The Scorecard columns let you compare price, earnings, and graduation inside the set. A comparison is not a federal score.

Eligibility for particular grant programs can depend on more than the flag this file stores. If you are asking about a grant, use the Department of Education's current eligibility list. This page is the Scorecard flag.

Where the schools are

These schools sit in 34 states. The largest groups are California (171), Texas (101), Puerto Rico (57), New York (38), and Illinois (33). The rest of the roll is spread across the other states in the table.

The full roll has 603 schools. The table shows 100 at a time. The page links under the table move through the rest. Page 1 is the canonical address.

Who runs them

By reported control, 415 are public and 188 are private nonprofit. A blank control stays out of that split.

Predominant degree is the credential the campus awards most often. On this list it is a bachelor's degree at 284 schools, an associate degree at 213 schools, and a certificate at 106 schools. A campus can still award other credentials.

How large they are

The largest undergraduate enrollments on this list are Arizona State University Campus Immersion in Tempe, Arizona, with 64,674 undergraduates, Texas A&M University-College Station in College Station, Texas, with 59,615 undergraduates, University of Central Florida in Orlando, Florida, with 59,146 undergraduates, Arizona State University Digital Immersion in Scottsdale, Arizona, with 53,782 undergraduates, and Miami Dade College in Miami, Florida, with 46,182 undergraduates. Enrollment is the undergraduate figure. It is not a ranking, and it leaves out graduate students.

4 schools are reported as online-only. The others are not marked that way in this file.

Admission

259 of 603 schools report an admission rate. The median of those rates is 82%. Schools with no reported rate stay out of the median. A missing rate is not an open door, and it is not a closed one.

The lowest reported admission rates on this list are University of California-Los Angeles in Los Angeles, California, at 9%, Inter American University of Puerto Rico-Fajardo in Fajardo, Puerto Rico, at 27%, and University of California-San Diego in La Jolla, California, at 27%. A lower rate is harder entry. It is not a score for the school.

The highest reported admission rates on this list are Providence Christian College in Pasadena, California, at 100%, Union Adventist University in Lincoln, Nebraska, at 100%, and Albizu University-San Juan in San Juan, Puerto Rico, at 100%.

What they charge

Among 409 public colleges that report an in-state sticker price, the median is $3,923. 6 other public colleges on the list do not report one. Among 180 private colleges that report a sticker price, the median is $28,658. 8 other private colleges on the list do not report one.

Sticker price is not net price. Grants, waivers, and a service commitment can move the bill by a wide margin. Open a school for the net-price figures.

Earnings and graduation

Among 586 schools that report earnings, the median of those school-level medians is $44,416. The clock starts at entry, not at graduation. The highest reported medians on this list are Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in Lubbock, Texas, at $92,348, California Polytechnic State University-San Luis Obispo in San Luis Obispo, California, at $90,768, and Loma Linda University in Loma Linda, California, at $89,816.

Among 589 schools that report a graduation rate, the median rate is 41%. A blank rate is left out. It is not treated as zero.

Athletics in this file

55 report NCAA Division I athletics, 22 play FBS football, and 11 play FCS football. A blank athletics field means this file has no division for that campus. It does not prove the campus has no team.

Also on other lists

Some of these schools also meet the rule for another list on this site. The overlap is a second flag or a second classification. It is not a second ranking.

25 are also on R1 research universities. 28 are also on R2 research universities. 13 are also on liberal arts colleges. 5 are also on women's colleges.

How these figures work

Admission rate, enrollment, sticker price, earnings, and graduation rate all come from the College Scorecard. Earnings are the median 10 years after a student entered the school. Tuition for a public college is the in-state sticker price. Tuition for a private college is the published sticker price. None of these is net price after aid.

A blank field stays blank. This page does not turn a blank admission rate into an open door, a blank fee into a free application, or a blank earnings figure into zero. The table above is membership under the rule in this guide. Sort order is not a quality ranking.
