Test policy is College Scorecard field ADMCON7. Value 1 means required.

Guide

What test-required means in this file

Test-required on this page means ADMCON7 is 1. The college reports that it requires SAT or ACT scores. Test-optional and test-blind are different answers, and each has its own page. A blank policy is on none of the three. The table sorts by state.

A college can change this rule faster than the Scorecard updates. Use the list to see the reported policy. Check the college before you apply. A row here is not a promise about the application you are about to submit.

Value 1, required

The admissions consideration field has a small set of answers. Value 1 is the required answer. This page does not infer a requirement from a high average score, from a selective admission rate, or from a sentence on a marketing page.

Service academies and other selective colleges are on this list only when the field says required. Selectivity alone does not put them here. A less selective college that still requires scores stays on the list. The policy is the policy.

Optional, blind, and blank

Value 5 is optional. Scores are considered and not required. Value 3 is not considered. Both are excluded here. A college that calls itself test-optional in a headline and still has value 1 in the Scorecard stays on this page until the field changes.

A blank is the easy mistake. Readers treat a missing policy as optional. This site does not. The college is absent from all three policy pages until a value is reported.

The policy is not the admission rate

Colleges that require scores still range from more open to very selective. Read the admission section before you treat this list as the hard-to-enter list. The hard-to-enter colleges are a different cut of the data.

Sending scores is the reported expectation here. Superscoring, self-reported scores, and a later verification step are details the ADMCON7 field does not encode. The college's current instructions cover those.

The field moves

Test requirements tightened and loosened at many colleges over a short period. A federal snapshot will disagree with last week's announcement sometimes. That lag is a property of the source. Hiding it would make the page look more current than it is.

Program-level rules can differ from the undergraduate policy in the field. A graduate program, a transfer rule, or an international requirement may not match ADMCON7. This page is the undergraduate consideration field.

Where the schools are

These schools sit in 32 states. The largest groups are Florida (15), Tennessee (10), Arkansas (8), Georgia (6), and Mississippi (6). The rest of the roll is spread across the other states in the table.

Who runs them

By reported control, 58 are public, 34 are private nonprofit, and 1 is private for-profit. A blank control stays out of that split.

Predominant degree is the credential the campus awards most often. On this list it is a bachelor's degree at 82 schools, an associate degree at 8 schools, and a certificate at 3 schools. A campus can still award other credentials.

How large they are

The largest undergraduate enrollments on this list are University of Central Florida in Orlando, Florida, with 59,146 undergraduates, Purdue University-Main Campus in West Lafayette, Indiana, with 44,503 undergraduates, Florida International University in Miami, Florida, with 39,508 undergraduates, University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida, with 37,207 undergraduates, and Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas, with 36,177 undergraduates. Enrollment is the undergraduate figure. It is not a ranking, and it leaves out graduate students.

1 school is reported as online-only. The others are not marked that way in this file.

Admission

93 of 93 schools report an admission rate. The median of those rates is 70%. Schools with no reported rate stay out of the median. A missing rate is not an open door, and it is not a closed one.

The lowest reported admission rates on this list are Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, at 4%, Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts, at 5%, and College of the Ozarks in Point Lookout, Missouri, at 12%. A lower rate is harder entry. It is not a score for the school.

The highest reported admission rates on this list are University of Arkansas Community College-Morrilton in Morrilton, Arkansas, at 100%, Manhattan Christian College in Manhattan, Kansas, at 100%, and Kentucky Mountain Bible College in Jackson, Kentucky, at 100%.

What they charge

Among 56 public colleges that report an in-state sticker price, the median is $8,691. 2 other public colleges on the list do not report one. Among 34 private colleges that report a sticker price, the median is $19,390. 1 other private colleges on the list do not report one.

Sticker price is not net price. Grants, waivers, and a service commitment can move the bill by a wide margin. Open a school for the net-price figures.

Earnings and graduation

Among 84 schools that report earnings, the median of those school-level medians is $48,701. The clock starts at entry, not at graduation. The highest reported medians on this list are Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts, at $143,372, Georgetown University in Washington, District of Columbia, at $103,494, and Georgia Institute of Technology-Main Campus in Atlanta, Georgia, at $102,772.

Among 93 schools that report a graduation rate, the median rate is 55%. A blank rate is left out. It is not treated as zero.

Athletics in this file

29 report NCAA Division I athletics, 14 play FBS football, and 11 play FCS football. A blank athletics field means this file has no division for that campus. It does not prove the campus has no team.

Also on other lists

Some of these schools also meet the rule for another list on this site. The overlap is a second flag or a second classification. It is not a second ranking.

15 are also on R1 research universities. 11 are also on R2 research universities. 7 are also on liberal arts colleges. 5 are also on HBCU colleges. 12 are also on Hispanic-serving institutions.

How these figures work

Admission rate, enrollment, sticker price, earnings, and graduation rate all come from the College Scorecard. Earnings are the median 10 years after a student entered the school. Tuition for a public college is the in-state sticker price. Tuition for a private college is the published sticker price. None of these is net price after aid.

A blank field stays blank. This page does not turn a blank admission rate into an open door, a blank fee into a free application, or a blank earnings figure into zero. The table above is membership under the rule in this guide. Sort order is not a quality ranking.
