Newport is a seaside city on Aquidneck Island in Rhode Island, United States. Newport was founded in 1639 on Rhode Island, which is now called Aquidneck Island. Its eight founders and first officers were Nicholas Easton, William Coddington, John Clarke, John Coggeshall, William Brenton, Jeremy Clark, Thomas Hazard, and Henry Bull. Doris Duke, heir to the tobacco fortune of her father, James B. Duke, founded the Newport Restoration Foundation in 1968, and for the next 25 years, until her death in 1993, saved much of Newport's colonial architectural heritage. (Wikipedia)
